Young Štefan spent his childhood in Liptovský Hrádok, learning to swim in the river Belá.

Štefan Luby graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Technical University in Bratislava. Gradually, he obtained the titles of candidate of science, associate professor, professor, doctor of science. He completed his postgraduate studies in solid state physics. He was finally elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and a corresponding member of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He was the director of the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He was a long time a president of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He is currently vicepresident of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Our physicist also gained other memberships in the academies of sciences: Slovak Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Academy of Mining Sciences in Russia, Central European Academy of Sciences. He was President of the Federation of European Academies All European Academies. His awards also include the multiple awarding of the title of Dr. h. c., at the University of Salento, Slovak Technical University, University of Constantine Philosopher, University of Trenčín. He completed his engineering studies with the work Measuring the Lifetime of Minor Charge Carriers. He defended the title of Candidate of Sciences with his work Physical Properties of Germanium Thin Films and Their Preparation by Impulse Sputtering. He defended his dissertation (DrSc.) On the topic Preparation and properties of metal and semiconductor layers for electronic components and circuits.

Fate drove Štefan Luby into the waters of natural sciences, despite the fact that his family had scientific traditions in the legal sciences. His field of interest is primarily nanotechnology, where academician Luby has achieved significant scientific achievements. In addition to nanotechnology, it also deals with laser technology, amorphous semiconductors, optics, electron paramagnetic resonance in amorphous Ge, MOS transistors, R MOS technology, silicide gates and gates made of refractory metals, tantalum-based thin-film resistors for hybrid integrated circuits, tantalum-based resistor adjustment gel electrode, Research and development of plasma technologies, especially devices for magnetron sputtering and plasma oxidation, Superconductivity in W / Si multilayers etc.

.He currently works, in addition to an important position at the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, as a senior researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the scientific councils of many faculties and universities.

So far, Štefan Luby has been the responsible solver of 18 Slovak and 13 foreign projects. He became a member of 17 scientific societies. He is the author of more than a thousand publications. In the scientific community, he is not only an active scientist, official and manager of science, but he is also the adornment of scientific conferences. He is known for his bon motives as well as his sense of humor. He is a welcome speaker at scientific conferences, both for the good scientific level of the papers and for the research experience and many stays in other countries that he likes to distribute. We younger colleagues like to learn from him. His extraordinarily gifted daughters also followed in the footsteps of science. Barbora deals with immunology and microbiology, daughter Martina is an economist.

Dear Štefan, ad multos annos!
